Only 3% of roofers nationwide earn GAF’s Master Elite status for asphalt shingle and roofing material installation. Many roofing companies do not quality because of the stringent qualifications.

For example, GAF insists on and verifies the following:

• 7+ years in business – 1 year in their certified program
• 99% customer satisfaction based on GAF independent surveys
• $1 million general liability coverage and proper and valid worker’s compensation
• Satisfactory rating with BBB
• GOOD or better credit rating
• Clean banking record (no overdrafts, negative information)
• Clean distributor reference with excellent payment record for asphalt shingles and roofing materials
• No unresolved liens or judgments
• Good workmanship record

CertainTeed’s ShingleMaster status is similarly stringent. Roofing contractors who are focused on superior workmanship and customer satisfaction earn the SM credential by employing a Master Shingle Applicator qualified workforce or participating in an SM credential course.

Asphalt shingles and roofing materials can last decades with one caveat. The shingles and materials must be installed correctly using the latest manufacturers’ (like GAF and CertainTeed) specifications. If asphalt shingles and roofing materials are not installed properly they can dramatically reduce the roof’s lifespan, void the asphalt shingle manufacturer’s warranty and cause extensive damage to your home.
